No gun found in Yazoo County High School Disturbance

Posted: Updated:

Sheriffs deputies responded to a fight at Yazoo County High Thursday morning.  Sheriff Jake Sheriff says several students got into a physical altercation.

The school was put on lock down after deputies received information a gun was involved.

Sheriff Sheriff says no gun was discovered.  "There was talk of a gun, we went through all layers to ensure that there was no gun," said Principal Dr. Tom Taylor.  Taylor says students made posts on Facebook with false information saying one of the students involved had a gun.  Investigators say they did not find one.

Students tell WLBT News they heard other students yelling "Gun!" and began running away from the disturbance in a back hallway.  School officials say the unconfirmed reports of a gun involved were also spread through text messages.  School leaders met with parents who came to pick up their students early, concerned the violence could escalate.

Students showed us the postings about a gun on their phones in the school parking lot.  Many were scared during the incident.  "I figured it was a fight, next thing I knew a bunch of people started running along the hall hollering, 'he's got a gun,' said student Kenneth Chisolm.

The school was put on lock down for a short time, which is routine in a situation like this.  Teachers locked their students in the classrooms until the fight was under control.  Five students involved were taken to the Yazoo County Sheriff's Department for questioning.
