Belhaven set to open Baseball Season

JACKSON, MS. (WLBT) Believe it or not, baseball season starts on Friday for the Belhaven Blazers.

Hill Denson's squad enters the 2012 year ranked 15th in the NAIA.

The Blazers won a school record 45 games in 2011.

Denson says the strength to this year's team will be the pitching.

Belhaven welcomes back the entire rotation from last season along with three transfers from Southern Miss.

"They can be outstanding pitchers. Geoffrey Thomas was a saturday starter at USM last year and Jonathan Thompson was Sunday starter. Matt Shaw is with us also that pitched relief for them some last year. Certainly they can make a big impact," said Denson.

"I came in and looked at the roster and I saw that they had a majority of their pitches coming back and both me and Thompson said, hey, we are going to use this opportunity to add to the program Belhaven has had for many years," said USM transfer Geoffrey Thomas.

Belhaven opens the season January 28th at 3:00pm against Blue Mountain.
