JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A Jackson minister says he's been trying for months to get the city to fix a sinkhole in front of his church on Porter Street. Pastor J. W. Moore of Emmanuel World Ministries says all they do is patch the hole, only to have it cave in again.
You can see the city has recently patched it, because the asphalt is fresh, but already it is starting to sink again.
Pastor Moore says Atmos Energy has told him there is a gas line under the sink hole and that worries him because his church, a school and a nursing home are nearby.
Just over a block away last September, a Mustang ran into a similar sinkhole on Porter street. Nobody was hurt.
"They say they are gonna take care of it, and ah they will come out and patch it" said Pastor Moore. "We have to fully rectify the problem. Patching is not going to do it. It needs to be fixed. In other words, there need to be some pilings underneath it and then the concrete need to be put back on top of it from happening again. I mean it's a hazard that an automobile could go off in it."
Since WLBT went out, the city of Jackson has put barricades up around the sinkhole.
We also called the gas company and they have come out and marked, with yellow paint where the gas line is.
Both have promised to work to eliminate this problem.
