YAZOO CITY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

One man is dead after Amtrak's City of New Orleans passenger train hit a pick up truck in Yazoo City Saturday morning.

Skycopter 3 video showed the scene of the wreck at the Grand Avenue crossing. Authorities say their initial investigation shows the victim, who was in a red pickup truck, was attempting to beat the train across the tracks.

The victim has been identified as Herbert Lee Cole, 73, of Yazoo City. Cole's 1996 Ford truck caught fire as emergency personnel were trying to get to him. Authorities say the train pushed the truck about a quarter of a mile before it could stop.

There were 155 passengers aboard the train; none was injured. They were taken by bus to their final destinations.

The passengers say it was a frightening situation.

"We saw a lot of smoke and a couple of tires flying through the air, so we knew something had happened," said passenger Fran Norris Thompson. "Really, really tragic."

"My daughter has epilepsy," said passenger Johnella McIntoush-Martin. "She had several seizures, and the paramedics got on the train and treated her while she was on there. I was scared for me, I was scared for her mostly because this was real, real emotional for her because she saw smoke and she thought we were going to blow up -- and just a lot of, just a lot of emotion."

The crash happened about 10 a.m. Saturday. The train was en route from Chicago to New Orleans.
