JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Here's something you don't see often in the Capital City: a scuba diver waving at people from a fish tank!
That's one attraction at the "Got Fish" event at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Saturday.
Children learned about all types of fish and other marine wildlife, from their swimming habits to their anatomy.
Volunteer Jonathan Smith has a giant stuffed fish to point out how fish live underwater.
"They need gills to breathe oxygen in water. (A bass) can eat anything it can swallow," Smith said.
Kids are also peering at fish scales through a microscope.
"They have found it very fascinating," said volunteer Ashley Williams. "They like to see and compare what we have here to other types of fish in the ocean or in the aquariums here."
Upstairs, adults are learning too.
Expert panelists are advising recreational fishermen on everything they need to know about crappie and bass.
The panels are hosted by Randy Newell, co-host of Mississippi Outdoors.
"They might give away secret locations to their favorite fishing holes, knot tying techniques, lure selection, anything you might want to ask they can answer," said Aquarium Biologist Karen Dierolf about the panelists.
The "Got Fish" even is in its 12th year.
