Church Burglary Arrests

BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Two Jackson men are behind bars, in connection with a string of church burglaries across the metro. Byram police say 19-year-old Amos Simons, and 20-year-old Kewane Latiker are facing multiple counts of commercial burglary charges.

Byram police say the two are responsible for two church burglaries there, and several in Hinds County and the city of Jackson. Investigators say the two have admitted to taking electronics and musical equipment from the churches, most of which has been recovered by police.

The crimes started in early January.  Simons and Latiker both are from West Jackson.  Investigators would not reveal what churches were victimized.  The items are in possession of the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.

Commander Ford Hayman of the Byram Police Department said, "Just the other day a Hinds County deputy doing a very good job routine patrol stopped the vehicle with two occupants. These gentlemen were believed to be possibly responsible for some of the church burglaries due to some of the items in their vehicle at the time of the stop. "

The stolen items will be returned to the churches later this week. Simons and Latiker could make their initial appearance in court as early as tomorrow. Byram police say this is an ongoing investigation.
