Should the Gulf of Mexico be renamed the Gulf of America?
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Mississippi Representative Steve Holland of Lee County has introduced legislation to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America for all official purposes in the state of Mississippi.
The bill has been referred to three house committees; Tourism, Marine Resources, and Interstate Cooperation.
A predominately Hispanic group in Minnesota, Cafe Con Leche Republicans, is taking issue with the bill and asking Holland to withdraw it.
In a letter to Holland, the national Republican organization said "Apparently you don't take your responsibilities seriously. Surely the State of Mississippi has more pressing matters to attend to than this."
If the bill passes, it would take effect July first.
