JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
For the first time this week, Mo Money offices in Canton and Jackson were open Friday. Managers at the company still not talking about this extended delay in refunds for their customers.
There was a steady flow of people picking up their checks at all the metro area locations.
Some say they were having to bring them to check cashing businesses, because their banks wouldn't cash them because their addresses weren't printed on the check.
Mo Money says they closed after threats of violence from customers, when their checks didn't arrive as promised. Mo Money blames that on a problem at the IRS. Tax preparation companies in the metro say they too have been experiencing a delay this year, that could slow everyone's tax refunds down by a week.
Dewayne Thomas at H&R Block says, "This is something that has effected everyone across the nation. There have been some significant delays from the IRS that has resulted in people being delayed significantly with getting their tax returns in their hands."
Licensed tax preparers say you should always get your taxes done at a reputable business, and ask questions. Make sure they are registered with the IRS. You should also make sure the tax preparer has been trained on the most recent tax laws, which change from year to year. And ask if your tax preparer will guarantee their work.
Tax experts say the average return should cost someone just under $200.00 to file. If you paid more than that, you paid too much.
