Missing plane found, reports say pilot alive

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A small plane has been found in the north Mississippi woods after crashing early Tuesday, and reports from local news organizations say the pilot survived.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the plane was about 18 miles southeast of Tupelo when the pilot reported a problem Tuesday morning. Only the pilot was aboard the single-engine, Piper Cherokee Six.

Mississippi National Guard spokesman Tim Powell says 1 of the Guard's UH-72 Lakota helicopters found the plane.

The pilot's condition was not immediately available. Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell didn't respond to numerous messages.

Bergen says the plane was flying from Ocala, Fla., to Olive Branch, Miss. It's registered to Buccaneer Aviation Inc., a Delaware corporation.

Bergen says she couldn't say what kind of problem the pilot reported.
