A Ridgeland police officer, who was not actually involved in the pursuit, but is familiar with it was the lone witness. Lt. Bryan Myers carefully laid out how 48-year-old Robert Williams tried to hit an officer responding to a shoplifting call in Ridgeland, then led officers on a chase above 100 miles per hour across the reservoir dam, ending at Highway 25 and Grants Ferry Road with the death of 37-year-old Milinda Clark.
Judge Kent McDaniels sent the case to a grand jury and told Williams he was a special danger to the community while denying his bond.
"There will be no bond granted today or any other day in this court. You certainly have a right to appeal this decision, if you don't like it, to the supreme court. They may disagree with me. You will never be released in this court," said Judge McDaniels.
District Attorney Michael Guest is convinced he can convict Williams of felony fleeing resulting in the death of another person.
Guest said, "I believe that the judge has rightly denied bond, because I believe that if Mr. Williams were allowed to post bond, he knows that he is going to jail for the rest of his life."
The court appointed attorney in the case, Afrom Sellers, told reporters later the chase was not necessary.
"I do not know how we got to a 100 mile per hour police chase over a basket, or two baskets of meats," said Sellers.
Robert Williams has been bound over to a Rankin County grand jury without bond and he faces up to 80 years in prison.
