Stem cells being tested in hearts

Posted: Updated:

A new study finds stem cells from a patient's own heart could help reverse damage caused by a heart attack.

Researchers harvested stem cells from the heart muscle of 17 heart attack patients. After doctors pinpointed the location and amount of damage, each patient received an infusion of 12 to 25 million of their own stem cells.

The amount of damaged heart muscle was reduced by half.
