Dixie National Quarter Horse show a big draw

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Some of the top quarter horses in the world are competing for top prizes right here in Jackson.

The classes include roping, barrels and halter.

It's all part of the Dixie National Rodeo and it's free to the public.

The American Quarter Horse Association show in Jackson is the third largest in the world.

AQHA is 350,000 members strong with quarter horses in 50 countries.

And this competition is premier drawing and estimated 3000-3500 entries.

Mike Perkins, a former President of the Quarter Horse Association, is one of 8 judges that will make the cuts whittling down the horses and riders to the best of the best. 

"The good ones are really fun to judge and that's the kind you like to judge because you can put the really good horses at the top and just makes the whole deal better" Perkins said. 

George Phillips, former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District, is in line to become the first Mississippian to head up the American Quarter Horse Association. 

"I am really proud of it," Phillips said. "It's a great honor. I've been involved with horses my whole life and it's sort of the ultimate for a horse guy to be president of the American Quarter Horse Association which I'll be in three years."

Top riders, world class horses and some of best excitement to be found anywhere at a family oriented event.

It's the Dixie National Quarter Horse show.

Cindy Hyde-Smith, Commissioner of Agriculture, said it generates nearly $20 million for Jackson.

"It is free. It is the premier show in the country," Hyde-Smith said. "You just won't see any better horses, better cowboys and better cowgirls than what will be here."
