Mayor Johnson: Infrastructure first, road repair second

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

For the past week, Rose Cunningham of Pearl has had to get rides everywhere she goes.

Two of her car's tires need replacing, and a front tire is warped.

She blames the conditions on McDowell Road.

"In the one spot there's a big metal plate type thing," Cunningham said. "You cannot get around it, for the way it's sitting. It put a big bubble on my front tire. It's really bad up there."

The plate is in the westbound lanes of McDowell, just west of Belvedere Avenue.

The City of Jackson says the metal plate was probably put here because work began on a utility line at that spot recently, and the metal plate will not be permanent.

But despite all the ruts and uneven asphalt on McDowell, the City of Jackson says there are no current plans to repave it.

During a City Council meeting Wednesday, Mayor Harvey Johnson told council members that before more repaving takes place, the City first needs to update the master plan and pinpoint where the water and sewer problems are the most crucial.

"This is where the oldest water pipes are, this is where we need to be focusing," Mayor Johnson said. "That will help inform your viewers as well as the public in general."

"We're going to work as quickly as we can," Mayor Johnson said. "We're getting ready to spend $1 million on street repaving right now."

Mayor Johnson says $20 million was just spent on road repair.

The City also plans to re-rate all the streets in terms of their resurfacing need.

The ratings will range from 100, which is the worst, to 1000, the best.

A road with a score of 300 or below will be put on a list to be repaved.
