Sleep issues might indicate Alzheimer's

Posted: Updated:

Difficulty sleeping during middle age may be a precursor to Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers studied the sleep habits of 100 healthy people between the ages of 45 and 80. Those who woke up more than 5 times per hour were more likely to have a build-up of amyloid plaques in the brain.

Amyloid is a marker of Alzheimer's disease -- and can be found in the brain years before symptoms begin.

-Study led by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and presented at the American Academy of Neurology's annual meeting in New Orleans
