JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A warning Wednesday for residents in Central Mississippi from the FBI.

The agency is notifying the public about a telephone scam that claims the person is eligible for a $5,000 to $10,000 grant from the Grants Department of the federal government.

It supposedly can be used for home or residential purposes.

A claim code containing two letters and three numbers is provided, along with a telephone number beginning with "202," which is a Washington, D.C. area code.

The scammer asks the person to provide credit card or banking information in order to pay a processing fee for the grant.

They also give the person the option of sending funds through Western Union.

Contact local law enforcement or the FBI if you are contacted.
