Judge OKs mental evaluation for teenager

VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - The trial of a Warren County teen charged with murder in the 2011 death of her stepmother has been postponed until Aug. 20.

Circuit Judge Isadore Patrick on Tuesday granted a defense motion to have the 14-year-old examined by a private psychiatrist or psychologist.

The judge gave defense attorney Marshall Sanders 30 days to obtain the mental evaluation or the girl will be sent to the Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield or another facility chosen by prosecutors.

Authorities said the body of 32-year-old Michelle Vega was found May 2, 2011, in the family home in Vicksburg. Authorities said neighbors reported seeing the girl drive away from the home minutes before her 15-year-old stepbrother returned and found his mother's body.
