JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A Hinds County Deputy was injured Thursday afternoon, after he made a traffic stop that turned into a chase at Sheppard and North State streets in Jackson.
Captain Joe Daughtry says the unidentified deputy attempted to make a traffic stop but the suspect bailed from his vehicle. A short time later, authorities were canvassing the area and the deputy noticed a car driving up and down Sheppard Road with the driver on a cell phone. The officer then saw the individual get in the vehicle and when he approached he noticed the passenger was the suspect he was searching for.
"Apparently, this person picked him up and as the deputy attempted to effect the arrest, the individual drug the deputy 20 feet," said Daughtry.
The deputy was injured but managed to radio for help and get to his cruiser. He got behind the suspects who wound up wrecking their car at Woodmont and Sheppard. The pair then fled on foot. The officer pursued and got into a struggle with one of the men. However, both suspects managed to escape.
The deputy was sent to the hospital and treated for abrasions on the left side of his body.
Investigators say they discovered drugs and scales in the suspect's vehicle.
