Four Hinds County judges have ordered Sheriff Tyrone Lewis to back off on an order he gave transferring, demoting and reducing salaries of court bailiffs.
If he doesn't comply, the judges say Sheriff Lewis could be held in contempt. Bailiffs are deputies who work for the court and are officers of the court. They are not to perform any law enforcement duty.
The order cites a previous court order made in 1996.
Lewis has made numerous changes in the department since becoming sheriff this year.
"We understand the court order, we received the court order today. It is a legal issue and we are going to deal with it in a legal fashion," Sheriff Lewis said.
