LOST GAP, Miss. (AP) - The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of an inmate at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility in the Lost Gap community.
Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says investigators were called to the facility shortly before midnight Monday to an initial report Stuart Brooks committed suicide in his cell. Calhoun says deputies are talking with staff and other inmates at the prison. He says it is still a death investigation.
Calhoun says guards transported Brooks to the facility infirmary and then to a Meridian hospital where he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.
Autopsy results are pending.
Brooks was serving a 3-year sentence for failure to register as a sex offender out of Warren County. Brooks was incarcerated on Sept. 23, 2010.
