BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An 18-year-old Brandon teen has finished in the top 24 contestants on the Fox television show American Idol. Now it's up to the viewing public to decide whether Skylar Laine Harden continues in the competition.

Skylar is probably launched on a whole new career just by getting this far. Her mother Mary harden of Brandon, who is the manager of the Beatty street grocery in downtown Jackson, came to work the day after the big news, with a poster trying to get votes for Skylar, who uses her middle name of Laine on stage. Mary harden is very proud of her daughter and shared some of her thoughts with us.

"Like is said I had totally decided and psyched myself out that she had not made it. I thought they have already got two country girls they have already picked and they will save Skylar for next year, but they decided not to they decided they were going to go this year so it was extremely exciting," said Mary Harden, Skylar's mother.

The Beatty Street Grocery, a popular fast food restaurant, for people who work downtown is owned by Mary Harden's parents Malcolm and Carolyn Massey.

Mary is right in the thick of things every day, taking orders for customers. She has been in this store and kitchen working since she was nine-years-old. We asked her about what her daughter hopes to do in life.

"She has been working on her writing. She likes performing on stage, so she can have a great time taking everybody along with her," added Harden.

So the sign is up trying to get people to vote for Skylar Laine on American Idol who has probably gotten a new career already from her performances on American Idol.
