They scamper in and fill out the choir loft at the Braxton Methodist Church for their regularly scheduled Wednesday after school rehearsal. This is another activity for these busy tween-agers, fitted in between school and sports and church. But it's something these 12 girls seem to be delighted to do. Bailey Lou Villers gave the choir a try on a recommendation.
Bailey Lou Villers: Because I heard that it was really, really fun. And because I thought it would be fun to just light up a person's day.
Walt: And the little choir made up of little people have been doing just that since last October, lighting up people's days. Proud mom of Stacy, Krista Bridges, who is hearing impaired, probably sees the impact of the choir better than anyone else because her enjoyment of them comes more from sight than sound.
Krista Bridges: What I like about the nursing homes, they go to nursing homes and Christmas parades serving the community.
Walt: Serving the community. What a nice age, between nine and 13, to start learning you get a lot more out of life when you give more to it. And these girls give through their singing. That is one of the goals of the choir according to organizer and director Gloria Barns.
Gloria: The biggest thing that we were looking for were girls that love to sing and that really enjoyed the opportunity to share their talents with others.
Walt: Evelyn Copeland says this is more than just singing for the girls.
Evelyn Copeland: They have lessons on teamwork. They have lessons on thinking well of others, how to get along with each other. And since they are 12 drama queens, it is good that they have this added to the curriculum.
Walt: From drama queen to team player. Plus you get to sing, too. Skyler Smith sums it up for HER feelings about being in the Simpson County Community Girl Choir:
Skyler Smith: Its awesome.
Walt: And that pretty much sums up the way they sound, too. Awesome. And the fact that they are, and the way they light up people's days just by being there and singing.
