Alcorn State fires football coach Melvin Spears, hires new AD

As we first told you in December, there will be a new head football coach at Alcorn State. The official announcement was made Friday during an alumni banquet in Vicksburg.

"As of today, Melvin Spears is no longer the coach at Alcorn State University" said school president Dr. Chris Brown.

So for the fourth time in six years Alcorn State is in search of a new head football coach.

"I hired him so you know I like him. There were three violations of policy and code and those were grounds for termination" added Dr. Brown.

He also announced that former Langston Athletics Director Patric Simon will be the school's new AD and assistant coach Todd McDaniel will serve as head coach on an interim basis.

Under coach Spears, quarterback Brandon Bridge left the team and McDaniel says he isn't returning.

"No Brandon Bridge is not coming back" said McDaniel. "Right now we have two quality quarterbacks on campus. Right now we're bringing in two more quarterbacks one six-six, 220 pounds from Houston Texas and another one from Racine, Wisconsin. Those kids are good quarterbacks and they are going to compete for the starting position."
