JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Members of New Horizon Church have learned that the privacy and serenity afforded by the trees and winding road at Parham Bridges South Park, has essentially been exploited.
Neglected by everyone in recent years, the park located off I-55 South Frontage Road, has been used as a dumping ground and a clandestine nighttime meeting spot.
"I didn't even know there was a park right here," said Timothy Griffin, volunteer and church member. "I guess that's how bad it was."
A long time ago, Parham Bridges South Park was used for family cookouts and special events.
"It was a park used for a concert 10-15 years back," said Ronnie Crudup, Jr., Executive Director of New Horizon Ministries. "At that time it was a little more cleaned up, but now it seems like no one's taking care of this place."
Deaconess Cathy Cotton-Newsome says that's why volunteers are now stepping in.
They hope the City of Jackson takes notice and takes action.
"Once they realize somebody's concerned about putting this park back to where it once was, then whatever was once going on, we're hoping it will cease," Cotton-Newsome said.
Volunteers from New Horizon and Jackson State University worked hard Saturday, collecting years worth of fallen leaves and debris, and trying to put a dent in the damage.
Assistant Pastor Christopher Wheatley says the cleanup is part of a larger effort.
"We're part of an organization called 'Shine'," Wheatley said. "There are several churches and organizations all around Jackson participating in the cleanup. Our focus is on Parham Bridges South."
Their hope is to see better-kept grounds, repaired picnic tables and playground equipment, and a bright spot for the community.
