Attala trial in slaying set for March 28

Posted: Updated:

KOSCIUSKO, Miss. (AP) - Two men charged in the January shooting death of Cedric M. Sharkey will stand trial March 28 in Attala County.

Fifty-2-year-old Frankie Barber and 42-year-old Barry Ware, both from Sallis, are each charged with murder in the Jan. 7 slaying of Sharkey, who was black. Barber and Ware are white.

Prosecutors tell the Star Herald (http://bit.ly/wsl7BI) that the Jan. 7 shooting appeared to have occurred after Barber and Ware confronted Sharkey, thinking he might have been involved in stealing iron or other scrap metal from Barber's property.

They say Sharkey died of a gunshot wound in the chest.

Barber was released on $500,000 bond Feb. 1 after a preliminary hearing. Ware remains in jail with bond set at $500,000.
