PETAL, Miss. (AP) - People owing fines to Petal's municipal court can get a bit of a reprieve starting Thursday.
The Petal Board of Aldermen has approved allowing each Thursday through the remainder of 2012 as amnesty days. The Hattiesburg American reports (http://hatne.ws/w7TOZf ) this allows Petal Municipal Court Clerk Michelle Strebeck to provide a discount to anyone with old fines.
If you have a fine, you must turn yourself in on a Thursday and pay the full amount owed. Strebeck said a person will be given a discount off the city's portion of a fine.
Strebeck couldn't give a dollar amount for outstanding fines, but said it is high. Many warrants date to 2003.
Petal Mayor Hal Marx said he hopes Strebeck's idea is successful at collecting old fines.
