State auditors are still trying to sort through the money mess in Southaven as the investigation into Southaven Mayor Greg Davis' spending continues.
SOUTHAVEN, MS -
(WMC-TV) – State auditors are still trying to sort through the money mess in Southaven as the investigation into Southaven Mayor Greg Davis' spending continues.
Davis has already been ordered to repay $170,000.
Now auditors are looking at thousands more of the city's money, in what they're calling a second civil investigation into the mayor's spending habits.
"Our civil investigation into some additional spending aspects such as the mayor's mileage and travel, some political contributions, as well as some additional salaries he was receiving from the city for some other jobs," said Lisa Shoemaker, of the state auditor's office.
Shoemaker said she doesn't know if the total amount will be as much as the first one, but does anticipate it will be a sizeable demand.
She also said the amount of money Davis still owes the auditor's office will likely increase, once the new items are added to his total.
"I believe he still owes about $60,000," she said. "He paid $96,000 back in December and we are still awaiting the remainder of his original demand."
The auditor's office also told Southaven aldermen to look at every credit card Davis uses.
"The aldermen are currently reviewing the city owned credit card," she said. "We are concluded on the personal credit card that was part of the initial demand."
Meanwhile, Shoemaker said there are no laws in Mississippi that allow the state to force Davis to pay up.
"We don't have authority to issue fines or penalties once we issue the demand," she said.
Shoemaker said the state auditor's office should have this second investigation wrapped up within the next 30 days.
