Settlement regarding Henley-Young Juvenile Detention Center

Posted: Updated:
HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A lawsuit against Hinds County's juvenile detention center may have been settled Wednesday with a tentative federal court agreement.

The federal class action lawsuit was filed by the Southern Poverty Law Center last June.

It alleged the center did not provide adequate services for juveniles arrested and housed at the Henley-Young Center.

Lisa Ross, attorney for the Henley-Young Center said they never admitted to the allegations against the Henley-Young Center and never felt they had to.

The parties came to agreement Wednesday in federal court during a fairness hearing before Judge Dan Jordon.

The agreement specifically addresses the handling procedures regarding juvenile inmates.

They range from disciplinary actions that must be followed by guards, to use of force, hygiene, and mental health care for detainees.

The independent expert, Leonard Dixon from Detroit, has been hired by Hinds County and will serve as a monitor for a two year period.
