Returning sailor meets son for the first time

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Fresh off a seven-month deployment to the Persian Gulf, Stephen Hesch embraced his wife, who he hadn't seen since last July. It was a moment captured Tuesday night at the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport, and it would be impossible to emotionally eclipse -- if it weren't for the moment that followed: Hesch being introduced to his three-month-old son Aiden.

"It's an unbelievable experience," Hesch said. "I have nothing to compare this to. Thank you all for being here."

The petty officer third class has called the USS Stennis home for the last half-year -- a deployment to the other side of the world made that much more difficult by leaving his pregnant wife and knowing he would have to wait to meet his child.

"It's amazing to be with family again," he said. "It's been seven long months, and it was hard."

Brittany Hesch is just letting the moment sink in.

"I'm just happy," she said. "(It's) very exciting to see him smile."

With so much catching up to do, Dad wasted little time starting the conversation with his young son.

Brittany Hesch is a Stonewall, Mississippi, native in town as her mom helps with Aiden. Now it's Stephen's turn.

"He's the most precious baby in the world," said Aiden's proud father. "It's a wonderful feeling."
