Canton rap video eviction hearing Wednesday

Posted: Updated:
CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Canton apartment tenant has been ordered to pay several months back rent, after her son appeared in a rap video.

Apartment managers where the video was shot, say it was a violation of her lease.

It was last summer, when Canton rap group '2 Gutta' YouTube video 'Welcome To My Hood' went viral.

Everyone in the crowd seemed to be having a good time, but what you don't see is Canton Estates Managers frowning at this activity.

They evicted Jennifer Williams from her four bedroom unit, because her son appeared in the video.

They say he was creating a disturbance.

"It wasn't as much the rap video as it was the disturbance this large group of people caused on the property," said Robin White, attorney for the Canton Estates apartments. "If you recall from seeing the video there were a number of automatic, semi-automatic weapons displayed."

A judge ordered Williams Wednesday to pay over $4,000 for back rent.

Williams was evicted in July; but didn't leave or pay rent, until February.

"We told her she had 30 days to move if she didn't move what the results would be and she apparently did not take that seriously," White said.

"Our position was there was not a lawful eviction until it was done by the court, we did not believe she should be held responsible for those months," said Damon Stevenson, Williams attorney.
