Do you have unclaimed money?

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Newly elected Mississippi State Treasurer Lynn Fitch has already given out $5 million in unclaimed property to Mississippians, or people who once lived here. And piles of paperwork are ready to be processed and turned into more checks.

It's the unclaimed money that financial institutions and other holders must release to the Treasurer if there's been no customer contact within five years.

"Right now with the economic times, what's going on across the country and our state, everyone deserves every dollar. And it's their money," Treasurer Fitch says. "What we've taken on is the investigation to try to find the people to get their money back to them."

To make it easy, the Treasurer's Office has set up a call center. Temporary workers are taking phone calls from people who want to find out if they're entitled to any of the unclaimed property. The number to call is 601-359-3534.

"We've seen lives change. We've had the opportunity to witness a family get money that can now send their daughter to college," Treasurer Fitch says.

Some of the recipients are municipalities or other government entities.

"The city of Drew received $50,000. The city of Moss Point received $38,000. Those are just two of the top ones," Treasurer Fitch tells us.

Some recipients are giving the money back to the Treasurer's Office to help fund an endowment to teach financial literacy to children.
