JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The suspect arrested in Friday night's fatal shooting in southwest Jackson has been officially accused in the homicide investigation.

Jackson Police have charged Christopher Gates, 31, with murder.

Investigators said he fired the shot that killed Jonathan White, 24, around 9:00 pm Friday.

White was struck under the chin and later died at a local hospital.

Police responded to the scene in the 1300 block of Whispering Oaks Cove.

Gates was taken into custody following the shooting.

Authorities said gunfire erupted after Gates and his unidentified girlfriend got into an argument.

Neighbors said Gates and White were friends, and they're not sure what led to the shooting.

Gates has been denied bond and is being held at the Hinds County Detention Center.
