JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The City of Jackson is one step closer to retiring the city's old water wells.

Mayor Harvey Johnson and contractors broke ground Wednesday on a five million gallon water storage tank.

Storage tank construction is the first phase of a three phase project.

Upon completion, residents in southwest Jackson and Byram will have surface water distributed to them versus well water.

"Surface water is much more reliable, we get our water from the Ross Barnett Reservoir, it's easier to treat in terms of environmental standards so it's good for everybody, it's more reliable its really easier for us, cheaper for us to treat," said Mayor Johnson.

The storage tank construction site is located at 2140 TV Road in Jackson.
