EDWARDS, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A high-speed chase initiated by a man fleeing from Vicksburg Police ended in a one-car crash on the Interstate 20 eastbound exit ramp in Edwards.
Police say the blue car driven by Phennix Givens, 37, was recognized by officers in Vicksburg. As officers attempted to pull over Givens for several outstanding warrants, he decided to flee.
Vicksburg officers allowed Warren County Deputies to take over the pursuit as the car left city limits. Authorities say Givens left the interstate in Edwards, then spun out of control as he headed toward the onramp.
Chief Walter Armstrong of the Vicksburg Police Department said the situation could have gotten much worse.
"We try to be very careful when we're involved in these high-speed pursuits," Armstrong told WLBT News. "They're very dangerous. However, we cannot allow the public to think they can commit these crimes and they go unpunished."
Givens will be charged with felony fleeing. A small amount of marijuana was also found on Givens, police say.
