Jackson files challenge to Ward 3 council seat

Posted: Updated:

Joyce Jackson has officially filed suit to challenge the Capital City's Ward 3 council seat election. She lost the race to Larita Cooper-Stokes last month. She's represented by Attorney John Reeves.

Jackson makes several claims of election improprieties. She says at Precinct 12, a radio was playing near the voting machines, and a Cooper-Stokes campaign ad played all day. Jackson also claims a polling manager at Precinct 12 made a racially charged statement in reference to her.

The petition to contest the race, filed in Hinds County Circuit Court, claims that voters were encouraged by workers to vote for Stokes at numerous polling places.

Cooper-Stokes won the runoff election by fewer than 60 votes. She's the wife of Kenneth Stokes, who previously held the Ward 3 council seat.
