JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A former Jackson Public School student is giving back, in fact he's made a career of it.

Friday, Tommie Mabry talked with at-risk students and their parents at Whitten Middle School. Mabry is a product of Jackson Public Schools, but he wasn't always a model student. He was kicked out of every school during his rebellious youth. Since then, Mabry has turned his life around, finished college, and he is now an instructor in the school system. He's sharing how he transformed his life, hoping to steer troubled students in the right direction.

"When I start giving them positive feedback, plus me being young, I think it helped my speaking more because I'm able to relate to them. I'm able to get on their level, so when I go around the united states and I speak to kids, the impact I bring to the table is amazing and I wouldn't give it up for nothing," Mabry said.

Mabry has also written a book about his experiences called, A Dark Journey to a Light Future.

He is hoping the book is used throughout the school system, to encourage students with behavior problems to change their ways.
