An apartment fire in west Jackson Saturday night has left several families without a home.
Jackson Deputy Fire Chief R.D. Simpson said 10 apartments were destroyed in that blaze at The Park at Autumn Ridge Apartments on Lindbergh Drive.
The units sustained heavy fire and water damage.
The complex was previously known as Glen Oaks Apartments.
Residents said occupants of the burning building tried to get save what they could as the fire spread throughout the unit.
Witnesses said children started the fire while playing with a lighter in a downstairs apartment in Building H.
Simpson said the investigation is ongoing, and no actual cause has been determined.
"Fire from the lighter had caught on to the mattress, and it just exploded. It started from the back and then it came up the front," said resident Kendedra Spells.
Fortunately everyone was able to escape.
No injuries were reported.
