Funny man Jeff Foxworthy brings humor, support to Romney

RICHLAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It may sound like a set up for a good redneck joke, blue collar comedian Jeff Foxworthy and a presidential campaign at a Mississippi trucking business.

"I tried to avoid politics for 53 years of my life and it's finally caught up with me," Foxworthy said.

The jokes that could have been were put in neutral as Foxworthy threw his support and laughter behind GOP presidential nominee candidate Mitt Romney.

"He's the most electable out of the people left and he the most qualified," Foxworthy said.

Foxworthy teamed up with Romney's campaign at Empire Truck Sales in Richland the day before Mississippi voters head to the polls for the Republican primary.

A native of Georgia, Foxworthy comes from the same home state as one of Romney's challengers, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Foxworthy says he's not against his fellow southerner but feels Romney is the man for the job.

"He's like a regular guy and I'm thinking why would you even do this," Foxworthy said. "I'd be on a yacht somewhere if I had your money. He cares. He cares about this country and he feels like he has the right tools and he's qualified to fix it."

Romney wasn't at the event, but the pair did make a stop in Alabama Monday morning where voters will also be going to the polls Tuesday, making both states the target for the top three candidates who've been crisscrossing the Deep South for support.

Playing off of the popular game show hosted by Foxworthy, Romney's message to voters is you don't have to be smarter than a fifth grader to know current leadership isn't working.

"We are going to have a test here," Romney said. "If you spend more money than every year than you take in, is that good for the economy?"

The crowd gave a thunderous "No!"

"Even the fifth graders could figure that one out," Romney said.

It's that kind political campaigning Romney hopes will help him laugh all the way to the White House.
