AmeriCorps members celebrated

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

This entire week is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of past and present AmeriCorps members. Those signed up in Mississippi's AmeriCorps program gathered Tuesday morning at the State Capitol to share what they do with state lawmakers.

On a daily basis, AmeriCorps members are out in the community helping students with school work, assisting people with disabilities and lending a hand to veterans. Along with helping others, AmeriCorps members also gain lots of personal experience.

"Whatever they want to do they're equipping them with tools and knowledge that will help them for the rest of their lives, just on getting jobs and seeing things to completion," said Deirdra Harris-Glover, the Public Affairs Specialist for the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service.

In exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members earn an education award that can help pay for college.
