JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Voter turnout has been light around the state but particularly in Claiborne County. That's because voters had no way to cast their ballots in the Republican primary.
In Hermanville, frustrated voters were turned away or simply left because no one was manning the machines.
The election commissioner for the district says he did what he was supposed to do by delivering the machines to the polling place.
The problem, said Rev. Johnny Hughes, was the Republican party chairman in Claiborne County resigned two weeks ago.
"The Republican party knew two weeks ago that this individual has resigned and surely they were supposed to have someone in place," said Hughes.
"There's a machine here, but there's no book here so nothing can be checked and you can't vote. It is not the American way," said Bobbie Davenport of Hermanville.
"This is not the only one. I was talking to a guy at the grocery store this morning and this lady went to vote and she didn't have a place to vote in Port Gibson. This is just Claiborne County," said Hermanville resident J.B. Davenport.
Republican party spokesman Brett Kittredge says workers did travel to Claiborne County as soon as they learned no workers showed up at the four precincts.
The GOP agreed to allow Democrat poll workers to watch Republican boxes.
