JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson police are investigating the shooting death of a burglary suspect. It happened Sunday night in north Jackson.

According to a police spokeswoman, David Lee Smith was shot to death after allegedly trying to break into an apartment at North Hill Parkway. Police say Smith was shot twice by the homeowner after trying to kick in the door. Shots were fired from inside the apartment and from the outside during the attempted break in.

Family members say the 24-year-old had been spending the weekend at a Jackson hotel with his girlfriend. WLBT met with the family at Smith's mother's home Wednesday afternoon on Powers Avenue.

According to his girlfriend, Sheneka Bratton, an acquaintance of Smith's came to the room Sunday night and they left together. Smith returned, but left again with a man named Lorenzo. That was the last time Smith was seen alive. The family claims the police are not giving them information.

"We won't have closure until we actually know what happened to him. He was only 24 years old. He has a birthday next week and he has a daughter. And it's very hard for us to sit here and not know what happened to him."

His mother, Annette Smith said, "He was shot 2 times. Where did they find his body? They said they found him in a ditch that's what they said."

JPD spokesperson Colendula Green told us police are still investigating the shooting of David Lee Smith and the attempted break in. The homeowner has not been charged.
