JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A stand off at a south Jackson apartment complex has ended in death.
It happened at The Village Apartments in the 300 block of Raymond Road beginning at about 5:30 Friday evening.
A Hinds County Deputy working off duty at the complex was contacted by a distraught mother who said her daughter and grandchildren were in grave danger.
Her daughter had been in a domestic dispute with her boyfriend earlier and the boyfriend had threatened to kill her daughter, grandchildren and himself apparently after she tried to break up with him and sign an affidavit for his arrest.
"..The boyfriend came through the gate, deputies tried to stop the individual. He proceeded on to his apartment. As the deputies went behind him and walked up the steps to make contact with him, at this time, it's not clear if it was one; possibly two shots fired," said Hinds County Sheriff's Capt. Joseph Daughtry.
"SWAT team was called out; hostage negotiations team was called out. Tried to make contact with individual through phone unsuccessfully on several occasions. At that time, the SWAT team was given the ok to go inside and that's where we found him in the front room deceased," added Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis.
That was about two hours after the incident began. The deceased boyfriend has been identified as 25-year-old Caleb Jackson. He was in the apartment by himself and no one else was harmed.
Sheriff Lewis says Jackson appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but the coroner will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Lewis says a victims assistance coordinator is on the scene to help the woman and her family.
