JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The chair of the National Council of Negro Women helps metro Jackson's chapter celebrate three quarters of a century.

A Founder's Day program was held Sunday afternoon at Woodworth Chapel on the Tougaloo College campus.

The theme of the 75th anniversary is Women United: Activate the Legacy.

The event is held in March which is also Women's History Month.

Organization representatives said there are more than four million African American women in the United States.

The council strives to address issues of human welfare and rights through public education, community service and advocacy.

"If we are working together, different backgrounds, different views but bringing all those to the table together we certainly can make a difference in our world today and the world is calling for women in particular to make a change," said Dr. Barbara L. Shaw Chair of the National Council of Negro Women Inc.

Mary McCleod Bethune founded the organization in 1937.
