Hinds County communications tower emergency

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Director of the Hinds County Emergency Operation Center declared an emergency concerning one of their communications towers.

Jimmie Lewis, and the President of Airwave LLC, who maintains the towers told the Board of Supervisors that the Gibbs Tower, near Utica was unstable.

Lewis blamed erosion causing the cables to become insecure and the tower is leaning.

Now, Hinds County is taking bids from contractors who can take care of the problem.

Officials with the county and Airwave reported they had noticed the potential for future problems last July.

Phil Fisher, Board Supervisor, questioned why it took them so long to act.

"If it was an issue that was brought forth in July, as the emails indicated, back-and-forth, that's when it started," Fisher said. "It seems now that we waited for an emergency to occur instead of doing anything preventative."

Lewis said that the current problems have only resulted in minor glitches but said problems could escalate.
