MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Two Madison County volunteer firefighters were trapped inside their fire engine when it overturned Monday afternoon.
The accident occurred sometime after 4:00 p.m. in the 600 block of Lake Cavalier Road.
A Southwest Madison County Volunteer fire truck came to rest on its side with a crushed cab.
Madison County investigators said the emergency response vehicle overturned several times.
Investigators at the scene said the two firefighters only suffered minor cuts and bruises.
They both have only been with the department for about a year.
Haley Symon was driving home when she happened upon the accident.
"It turns out that two of our friends, Connor Sorrey and James Snead were in the fire engine three truck, and they flipped it about six times," Symon said. "They're both at the hospital right now pretty shaken up."
"We go out on routes to check hydrants and things in the area, do a run in the area, and they were out in the area," said Southwest Volunteer Assistant Fire Chief Royzell Holmes. "All we can say is everything is under investigation. We don't know the cause of that."
"It did flip as you can see. It's in a curve," said Madison County E.O.C. Director Butch Hammack. "I'm not sure exactly what caused the wreck, hadn't gotten that far into it yet. Our main objective was to get them treated, and we did have to extricate one of the patients out of the vehicle."
The fire truck overturned less than a mile from the Southwest Volunteer Fire Station.
Officials tell us the newest truck in their fleet of three was destroyed.
