JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Police are investigating a possible murder. The body of a man was found in a creek at Pleasant Avenue and Elm Street Monday night.

Family members say it is the body of Clifton Guyton who is 34 or 35 years old.

They tell WLBT News he had been missing since Thursday.

Jeff Johnson who says he is Guyton's cousin tells WLBT News the family has been searching the area since they received word he could be close by.

After walking along Pleasant Avenue and Elm Street around seven o'clock, they found the body in the creek.

The family also believes Guyton was killed in retaliation for a fight.

"He had an altercation with him and they said they were going to do something to him basically and so they obviously found him from what we are gathering, they found him, caught him walking and shot him and wrapped him up in a black bag and drug him down here to this creek," said Jeff Johnson.

"Right now we're just coding it as a death pending," said Officer Colendula Green,  Jackson Police Department spokesperson. "We're trying to investigate that. The coroner is on the scene."

Officer Green says the case could be upgraded to a homicide once an autopsy is completed.

Sharon Grisham Stewart, Hinds County Coroner, says there were no obvious signs of trauma or injury.
