PELAHATCHIE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
As severe weather rolled across Rankin County, a roof was ripped from a house while the homeowner ran for cover.
A home just outside Pelahatchie on Highway 80 West sustained major damage Wednesday afternoon.
The roof was torn from the house exposing several rooms to water damage as downpours continued throughout the day.
Pelahatchie's current mayor told WLBT that the house belongs to former town mayor Joe Davis and his wife Glenda.
Large trees were also snapped around the home
City officials said no other damage was reported in the area.
"She heard a big noise, ran got in the closet, came out and the house was destroyed...He was at work just down the street and his wife drove and got him," said Pelahatchie Mayor Knox Ross. "They came back and immediately people started coming. We're just appreciative that so many good people just stopped what they were doing to come help them."
A National Weather Service Damage Survey Team will tour the site Thursday to determine if the damage was caused by a tornado or straight line winds.
