Davis Road bridge to close for repairs

Posted: Updated:
BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Beginning next week, the bridge on Davis Road in Byram will shut down to all traffic for much-needed repairs.

School buses and other heavy vehicles are not supposed to cross the bridge, but sometimes they still do. The bridge's concrete pilings are crumbling, and the wooden supports are split and decayed.

Byram Fire Chief Marshall Robinson says firefighters haven't been able to use the bridge for the past four months because the weight limit was downgraded to 10,000 pounds. Motorists should expect to see detour signs Monday morning.

"It's gonna be approximately 45-60 days construction time, that's pretty much dependent upon not having adverse weather conditions that might lengthen the process," Chief Robinson says.

The price tag to repair the state-aid bridge is about $250,000.
