Federal Judge rules in favor of WLBT anchor in suit filed by MLK family

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A federal court in Jackson ruled today that the family of Dr. Martin Luther King was not entitled to documents the famous civil rights leader gave to the mother of WLBT anchor Howard Ballou.

Judge Tom Lee said Dr. King had given numerous documents to Maude Ballou over 50 years ago as his personal secretary, when he was head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Montgomery.

Her husband was later the Archivist of a college in North Carolina, where he stored the documents for safekeeping.

After his death, the college sent the King documents to his son, Howard Ballou.

When the King family learned of the documents they claimed ownership.

The court held that the Ballou family were the rightful owners and that the King estate was also barred by the 3 year limit on the statute of limitations in Mississippi.

The court dismissed the case with prejudice.
