MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Dozens of students from Mississippi high schools stood for applause at Madison Central High School Saturday, as Congressman Gregg Harper announced their nominations to one of the United States Military Academies.
"The process to get there is so difficult," Rep. Harper said. "It's a long road to get there. They have to be at or near the top of their class in academics, athletics, community service. All of that factors in."
As representatives from each academy spoke to the crowd, students who hope to get nominated in future years learned more about the Congressional appointment process, and admission requirements.
The young people and their families were also able to meet those who are heading off to an academy this Fall, like Savonte Burns, Forest Hill High School Senior.
"I was nominated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. When I get there, I plan to major in mechanical engineering," Burns said. "I knew after I graduated I wanted job security. Something I wanted to make a career out of, instead of a job, so the Academy was my best outlet."
Dusty Weisner of Lamar School in Meridian has been nominated to two academies.
"Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy," Weisner said. "I went to an Academy one summer, I went to the Air Force Academy, I went there for a camp. It was really fun. I saw the campus and I loved it right then and there."
Those who attend a Service Academy must serve in the military for a minimum of five years after graduation.
