JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Leading Mississippians were honored Saturday night for their contributions to improving the lives of people.

The Spencer Perkins Center recognized the accomplishments of Dr. Aaron Shirley in the field of community development and former Governor William Winter in the field of reconciliation. The awards banquet and gala were held at Regency Hotel.

The Spencer Perkins Center is a community based program focusing on after school programs for inner city students. The event is also a passing of the torch from founder Dr. John M. Perkins to the next generation's leadership.

"William Winter a person who stood up at a time when it wasn't popular to stand up all over this state. He's done so many things and I'm glad I've developed a relationship with him over the last 20 years. Dr. Aaron Shirley every time you hear about medicine you hear about progressiveness and you hear about things going on in medicine, especially when you start talking about the Medical Mall you have to bow your head. You have to do something," said Dr. Dolphus Weary..

WLBT's own Katina Rankin served as emcee of Saturday night's event.
